Head Coach

Leo Lahey Snr.

Leo grew up playing AFL for AFL powerhouse St Mary’s in Darwin, representing the Northern Territory at National level and winning a number of senior and junior premierships before pursuing his professional career.  He returned to AFL in his early 30s becoming a player/coach in North Queensland’s Senior competition, coaching at Club level, as well as representing and later coaching the Queensland Police Service team at numerous National carnivals.

Moving to Canberra in 2014, Leo joined the Tuggeranong Bulldogs where he was quick to implement a strong football program that saw participation rates at the Club significantly increase. Leo’s coaching has continued over the last six years, coaching both Junior and Senior sides in Canberra AFL, including being named twice as the Coach of the Canberra AFL Rising Stars Womens Team of the Year, and Head Coach of the Canberra South Senior Womens representative team.

Leo has also been appointed to a number of coaching roles across academy and development squad programs within Canberra and NSW.  Leo has been with the South East Sports Academy (SESA) AFLW Athlete Development Program since 2018, being appointed as the Head Coach of the program in 2019, where he remains still.  In late 2020 Leo added to this role when he was appointed as the Head Coach for the inaugural GWS Giants Female Academy for the Canberra and South Coast NSW region.  This is in addition to his current appointment as Head Coach of the ACT under 15 Girls School Sports representative AFL team for the National Championships.

Leo has held coaching qualifications in cricket, soccer, athletics and AFL and is passionate about developing and mentoring people whether in a professional or sporting environment.  Leo’s coaching philosophy centres around creating the best opportunities for his players to thrive and improve,  which in turn leads them to success.  Leo says it is the number one attraction for him as a coach, “Seeing players succeed in the smallest aspects is even more rewarding that larger versions of success. It is a privilege to play such a role in improving, if only a very small part of someone’s day, week, month or life.”

Supported by an experienced Women’s Coaching group, TVAFC will confidently see its Women’s Program grow in 2021!
